I've had some time to think about the race and write down some thoughts.

First, I had a fun weekend with my sister, niece, dad, Evelyn, EZ, Jenny, and meeting Jessica who stayed with us. We found an apt through AirBnB right at where the Citgo sign is on the course (mile 25) so we had a great location. I had lots of fun hanging out and going to the expo. Janji through a nice pasta dinner for all of us there on Saturday night, and it was great to finally meet the founders and some other ambassadors.

The weather was the talk of race Monday. Temperature was around 40 and it was projected to be windy and raining. We got up, ate, went to the buses, got right on, rode the bus for an hour, got to athletes village. We went to the bathroom and then they were calling our wave. There wasn't much standing around at all. It started to rain as we were waiting at the start line, and I actually wore a garbage bag the first few miles of the race. I can't even tell you how much it rained or didn't rain. Seemed like it didn't really matter, it was a hard rain at some points and light at others and then wasn't raining at some times.

I really felt off most of the day, just kind of blah. Krista kept asking how I was doing, and I would respond with, "Eh, ok". My legs felt tired and heavy the whole race, but I just kept chugging along. It was super crowded the first few miles, like couldn't really move at all and it showed with our first 5K around 27 min. But after that, we were super consistent, hovering right around 8/8:10 pace for the entire rest of the race.

The crowd support was awesome at Boston, no doubt about that. The course is tough though and I can see why it is hard to run fast there. But I hung in for the race even though I was struggling. We saw my family/friends at mile 17 on the course and again at mile 25, which was much needed! I really was struggling hard the last few miles. I did though push hard all the way to the end and ended up running a PR of 3:34:25. I was a bit disappointed at first, but after thinking about it. I really feel like I had a great day. I wasn't feeling great, and really stayed with it and didn't let the weather/negative thoughts get me down. I don't know if I will be back or not. It was a wonderful experience to run Boston, but I'd like to focus on some other things I think!
So I signed the kids up for 6 weeks of swimming lessons, 1xa week, 30 minutes. I knew that T would not be happy if P was doing it and not her. But it hasn't actually turned out well for T in the end. P has really enjoyed going (3x so far). Here is the first day, you can see how excited one is and the other not so much.

The second week things were a little different...P is learning how to float and T is happy as a clam sitting on the bench not getting in the water!
So then I decided that I would talk her into getting in by saying I would get in with her. She seemed all for it, so I wore my swim suit for the 3rd lesson, but we spent the whole 30 minutes walking around the pool, eventually put our feet in and kicked and also sat on the edge and put our hands in and splashed them. Baby steps I guess! :)LZhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06943625239159121058noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23485083.post-6418054448419664292015-05-04T08:33:00.002-04:002015-05-04T08:33:37.799-04:00Happy Birthday TSo T celebrated her 3rd birthday back at the beginning of April. We had a very low key party, just some friends over. I attempted to make a super cool rainbow bunny cake. We had some disaster with the cake not rising, so I made another to save the day.

T is quite the hell raiser. Is in the tantrum throwing phase a lot. She is so so so so crazy. And ridiculously funny. She pushes P's buttons (and mine too) a lot. But she is also super independent. She absolutely loves her sister. Is all about following her and copying everything she does. She is super talkative and has quite the vocabulary. She knows her numbers well but letters are a struggle. We still really don't identify letters yet. She is super tiny-weighs only 26.8.lbs (9th%) but is 37" tall (47th%). She wears 2T bottoms but 3T tops/dresses.

Here is a photo collage of her at each of her birthdays:

The rainbow cakes didn't rise kind of fell apart coming out of the pan....so I used a lot of icing and put them together for the bunny face and made another cake for the ears and bowtie and in the end you can't tell!
It was pretty cold out, in the 40's and the girls insisted that they wear Easter dresses, of course! They had fun all the same! :)
I took the girls to a local 1K SuperHero run. They were so super excited about it! We met up with our friends and did lots of fun activities. Face painting, bounce house, tattoos, and then it was time for the 1K run! I thought all was good, but T decided that she didn't want to run (reminds me of P on her first race last year). P took off running and I held T's hand and we walked. It was two loops around a big parking lot, so while T and I only walked 1, the other kids ran and did 2. What was great is that P ended up running the whole way and passed us, so I was able to see her and take a couple pictures of her running by! She was super proud of herself (and so was I) that she ran the whole way!

Grandma and Grandpa came to visit and we had fun as usual. It was nice weather and so we were able to go to a new park to check it out.

Some updates on the girls:

T is gearing up to turn 3 next week and is full of energy and spunk! She is very well versed and lots to talk. She has an excellent vocabulary and is very easy to understand too. She knows all her colors and can count to 20 (except she usually leaves out 16). But she does not know her letters yet. We've been working at it, but she seems to not really have any interest.

P is starting to read quite a bit, and she loves it. I think it started with memorization of words, but now she is starting to sound out stuff and is starting to get it. She is rocking it out in gymnastics and pretty much can't sit still! She is also into playing games and lately UNO has been her favorite!

So yes, it's been awhile. I'll be updating this week! :) So I've been chugging along at the training for Boston. I've hit my mileage and pacing on every run and have been fueling with homemade sticky bites (out of the SkratchLabs Portable Foods cookbook). I've enjoyed not eating gummy type things on most of my runs. The weather has been fairly cooperative after our last snow.

This week was the biggest week of the whole plan. Totaled 57 miles this week. I have no more runs longer than 10 miles from here on out. Three weeks to go!!

On top of that we had really cold temperatures, so what little snow we had turned to ice which just didn't melt for quite a while. This forced me to do a lot of running on the treadmill. The girls did have fun though!
It was about 5-6 inches of soft fluffy snow. Not super great for sledding, but great for making snowmen, and snow angels and just having fun! And the girls (and I) had so much fun!!
I knew this going in, but basically there are 7 pretty solid hard weeks before taper starts. I did my first "strength" workout yesterday of 6x1 mile at 10K pace. And it had to be done on the treadmill due to some unexpected snow/sleet. I normally would have run outside it what we had but because I had to do intervals, I knew I had to hit certain paces. So 9 miles total on the treadmill. Whew....that was after 9 miles last Thursday on the treadmill too. Man on man.

The last few weeks of running had been pretty solid. Hitting my times no problem and feeling good. I think this week will be the first real test of everything. As I have another 9 hard tomorrow and 16 this Sunday for a total of about 53 miles this week. We are on the downhill though of training. 7 1/2 weeks left!

Here are a few pictures to document the last few weeks:
I managed 15 miles on a pretty cold morning:
family life has been chugging along. We've of course been keeping busy with all sorts of things. Potato heads, playdoh, crafts and ice cream! Currently the girls are getting along most of the time but definitely have their moments. If I'm with just P, she is incredibly sweet and nice and everything, but once she's with T all hell breaks loose. She is doing well in kindergarten prep, is reading a lot more now and is interested in math in terms of adding/subtracting things. T on the other hand seems to be reverting to crazy baby. A lot of screaming, tantrums, throwing toys, ect. We are not sure how to deal with some of these things but we just keep saying, it's a phase, it's a phase, and things will get better!

It is going well, I finally did less than I was prescribed in a workout Monday when I did 4ez miles instead of 5. I've been fighting a cold thing for almost a week and I just couldn't do it. I went to the doctor Monday and got some antibiotics and am feeling so much better already!

I'm still running a bit faster than my plan is set for on all runs. So maybe that means I'm secretly training to run 3:25 instead of 3:30 (HA!). I have a feeling that might not last too much longer as I start running more and more and longer and longer. I've done 3x7mile marathon pace runs, and start my first of 3 8mile marathon pace runs today. I'll run 15 this weekend too as my longest run in the plan.

I've also randomly found a few new running people and have been doing some other runs with them. It has been good but different and I definitely miss my runs with just my BRF! While I don't have any running pictures, I did take this photo of me doing a yoga pose post my interval workout of 6x800m (all around 3:15-3:19) on Tuesday at the track.
One of my good friends challenged me to let the kiddos dress me. So I let them pick out my clothes for Sunday. T picked out the top (I want the stripes she said), while P picked out the dark blue skirt and black leggings. I thought they did really well and I totally could have worn this to work. Instead, I was outside with the kids playing in a dressier out fit than I normally would. A couple of my friends told me I copped out by letting them pick a Sunday. To be fair, I did go grocery shopping on Sunday and saw lots of neighbors outside, so it wasn't like I was in the house all day.

Well, than I decided to try for Monday too. Below you will see what P actually picked out. To be honest, she first picked out the same blue skirt as the day before. I got dressed to take a picture, but I told her I didn't think I could wear the pink skirt along with the pink sweater and pink/orange striped shirt. So she picked out jeans instead, which is actually what I wore to work instead of the skirt. I told EZ that if I was a stay at home mom or had this been the weekend, I would have worn it, but I think because my job is to stand up in front of people all day talking to them, I just couldn't quite do it. Maybe I'll try again this summer for a week! :)

Someone who could potentially put the Celiac's, possible Hashimotos all together and just take a look at overall health. I feel like I was overproducing cortisal and wanted to also do a food panel study on possible irritants. There is a test for possible food sensitivities and basically what came back was dairy and peanuts (and wheat). The test tests for antibodies produced in your system to different foods. Peanuts weren't that high but dairy was significantly higher than anything else.

I also had some interesting blood sugar levels and high inflammatory markers in my system too. On the good side, if I had Hashimotos, I've put it into remission on my own (most likely due to the gluten free diet). The doctor put me on some vitamins to help with different deficiencies, like vitamin D and K and iron, plus some other herbs, like cumin which help with inflammation. I decided to wait until after the holidays to try and figure some things out and change some eating habits. So I gave up refined/process sugar and dairy about 2 weeks ago. I plan on given up the sugar for 3 weeks and then not really caring about that, but the dairy has to be 30 days to rid my body of the antibodies. I then get to add dairy back for 5 days in a row to see what happens.

In the past couple weeks though, our eating has been all flipped upside down. I've had to plan really hard to make sure I have enough calories (through Boston training) and enough nutrients at the right times too. I've made lots of new recipes...crustless quiche, maple salmon, honey mustard chicken, smokey quinoa and beans, spaghetti squash bolognase. I also make snacks like my own sugar free grain free granola with nuts, sticky energy bites for long runs, made my own hummus, making my own popcorn with dairy free butter. Definitely has been more challenging in the sense of just preparing dinners, but I'm managing.

My stomach on the other hand definitely seems to be off which is a bit of a bummer. I'm hoping that it is just my body trying to adapt to the new "normal" right now. On the other hand, maybe it's my bodies way of saying dairy is really ok for me! :) We will see! Here is a sampling of some food I've made recently.
I'm following the same hybrid beginner/advance Hanson's plan again but I have added a bit more to it in terms of some of the mileage so far. Not much, just a mile here or there. I've also really tried to keep at least 1/2 times a week some simple strength training and I've also added in 1-2 times a week of a simple 20 minute yoga for runners video to help with stretching. I don't know how much I'll be able to keep all this up as the mileage increases, but I'm just going to keep going as long as I can!

Longest run so far is 12 miles. I've done 3 miles of speed work every week (at 5K) pace, and I'm up to 7 miles tempo runs at marathon pace. These runs haven't been going well. I've consistently been running them too fast. That might be fine people might think, but the point is the train you body to run marathon pace for long periods of time and I know the pace I'm running isn't sustainable. (I'm running more like 7:40 pace on these when I'm aiming for 8:00/mile pace).

Spent a few days in San Antonio, TX for a large math meeting and I always enjoying running in new places. It was fun exploring (and getting lost). There were lots of beautiful views along the riverwalk and a really neat historic district too.
So yeah...you know I stopped posting. So I'll write a few posts to appear over the next week to catch up! December went by fast! We went to a holiday event at my work which was way overwelming, but the kids had fun playing in bounce houses, eating cookies and drinking hot cocoa, and playing in bubbles that looked like snow.

I finished up the semester and we got ready for the holidays. We spent Christmas morning at home and the girls opened lots of presents and then we packed up and drove up north to visit family. We spent 4 days at my dads house and was able to spend lots of time with family. As usual, we all got hair cuts, this time for me, I had enough to chop off to donate (and I added some color).
We then packed up and drove across Canada to see more family. Over the course of both places we stopped in two different Childrens Museum which was fun, and headed to a mall with a carousel that the girls enjoyed. The girls were troopers in the car!

We have taken P to a local farm the past two years around Halloween. There is a hay ride and tractors to play on, a mini corn maze, swings/tunnels, hay bales to climb, a cow train, plus these silos filled with corn kernals to play in. This was T's first visit to the farm and she LOVED it!
It's been a ridiculously busy semester and I'm getting to the end.

Here are some updates:
Training: I took a month+ off of any regular schedule after the half marathon. But two days ago I started day 1 of my Boston marathon training. 18 weeks of training, here we go!

The girls: We have our up and down moments of being nice and not being nice. T has become more aggressive in her attitude (saying No a lot and very defiant). She has been sent to the "principals" office (the director at daycare) twice now for her behavior because she has been throwing toys at other kids. Awesome.

P is doing well, managing her emotions much better. But still has her moments. They are both genuinely happy most of the time but they sure are crazy! P did have her first of two dental appointments for fillings and sealants. She did great and wasn't bothered at all by it!

On the home front: I've been trying out some new recipes, some have been good and others not. The sweet potato crust quiche, coconut flour blueberry pancakes and stuffed acorn squash were all successes. The sunflower seed flour cookies were a complete disaster (like that they turned green).
I took a trip back to Fayetteville, and it was so fun. What an amazing time I had seeing my wonderful friends! I followed that up with a Garth Brook concert where we got upgraded seats to the front row!
We stayed busy and went up to Pilot Mountain one day and to the zoo the other. This was our first visit to the zoo and the girls loved seeing all the animals. It was a long day though, as our zoo is rather large and very spread out!
I haven't run one since summer of 2011, and I felt like I had been training relatively well recently. So I semi trained on a modified Hanson half marathon plan, kind of did my own thing, ran with Jenny some and would just see how it went. We signed up for a race in Mt. Airy (home to Andy Griffith) and the website was a bit lacking in information about the course. It did say there were a couple hills, and luckily I did find a mapmyrun version of the course two days before the race. And well, yes, there were hills as evidence on the race shirt:

Jenny and I knew it would be mainly uphill the first 2 1/2 miles and then mainly flat and then there was a good uphill at the end. But you really don't know how hard the hills are until you run them. It. Was. Tough.

I had set out some goals with my A-goal of breaking 1:40, B-goal of breaking 1:42 and C-goal of breaking 1:45. Jenny and ran together and got through the first set of hills no problem and through the straight part, but I was hurting. We were both on track to break 1:40, and around mile 9 1/2 I told her to just go ahead, I didn't think I could keep up at that pace anymore. I ended up pretty dehydrated which was totally my fault, but I just kind of fell apart the last few miles. Here is a breakdown of the course profile-and some of the hills were at 10% grade, and then my splits.

Ended up running 1:42:08 which was good enough for 3rd place overall, and Jenny smashed her goal and ended up running 1:39. I'm so lucky to have such an awesome training partner, we are so evenly matched with our paces. Although, I assume not for long, as she is just going to blow by me soon!
Well, just so happens this time the pictures all turned out really good. I'm still debating on ordering them, maybe just a couple of one of the pictures-am thinking perhaps one of the ones of the two of them.

Monday:4 ez miles (9:15pace)
Tuesday:off
Wednesday: 7.5 miles- 6 at 7:35 pace.
Thursday:off
Friday:off
Saturday: 5 miles (8:00avg)
Sunday: 12.5 miles (avg 8:30) miles 7-10 at 7:50 avg pace
Total: 29 miles

I took an extra few days off this week for no other reason then I just didn't feel good and was unmotivated! The cool this this week though was Wednesday's run was during the lunar eclipse followed by the blood moon. I got to witness just after the start of the eclipse through the full covering and then the starting of the blood moon part until the sun came up which was really cool!

Monday:4 easy (9:15 pace)
Tuesday:off
Wednesday: 6 miles-intervals- 1x2mile (7:16pace), 2x1mile (7:10, 7:04)
Thursday: 4 easy (9:20 pace)
Friday: 7 miles- 6 Tempo at 7:38 pace
Saturday: 5miles (8:20 pace)
Sunday: 10 miles negative split (8:35 avg first half, 8:08 avg second half)
Total: 36 miles

I jumped back in again and ran a lot this week. Still lacking some motivation, and Wednesday interval run I had planned to do 2x2 mile but when starting the second one I just couldn't do it. So I stopped after a mile took a few min to recover and then did another mile. This run was also in the pouring rain in the dark which didn't help. Sunday's long run was the first run in awhile without my running partner Jenny and it definitely was harder to do those miles without her!

LZhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06943625239159121058noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23485083.post-71733455939967636132014-10-20T09:43:00.001-04:002014-10-20T09:43:09.822-04:00DentistI took P to her first dentist appointment the other week. She seemed to do very well with the xrays and cleaning and everything. We were there for almost 2 hours with the waiting and everything and I was impressed how well she did. On the down side, she has two cavities that need to be filled in her back molars, and 5 other teeth that need sealants.

There were a few other things they noted, like one of her top front teeth is yellow compared to the others and they asked if she had some trauma. I do recall something at some point with her falling so many that was it. Apparently, the xray shows that the nerve closed itself off on that tooth which is why it is turning yellow. They also mentioned she has really deep groves on her teeth which will be problematic for cavities (yeah), and then she also has some loss of enamel they said was likely from when her teeth were developing that she had an infection.

Either way, we have two visits scheduled to get cavities filled and sealants done. Woo hoo!!
Monday- 4 miles easy (9:45 pace)

Tuesday- off

Wednesday- 6.6 miles included 2x2mile intervals at 10K pace

Thursday- 4.2 miles easy with strides

Friday- 6 mile with 5@half marathon pace

Saturday- 4.2 miles easy

Sunday- 10.1 miles (8:30 pace)

Highlights-I included some Hanson elements this week with 2x2 miles at 10K pace (7:12 was my avg) and then a 5 mile at pace run (7:42 pace). Not sure really what my goal HM pace is going to be. I'm shooting for below 1:42 for sure and breaking 1:40 would be a huge A+ race.

It was such an emotional wait for me to receive the confirmation (took 9 days!) but in the end my time was fast enough to get to me to Boston. Words cannot express the happiness I when I got this email...this has been a long journey and I am so super excited to go run what I consider the greatest marathon on the planet.
It was a long year training hard to get myself ready to running Tobacco Road and the Hanson's Method plan I used was challenging to say the least, but it worked and I will use it again to try and PR at Boston. Right now I'm leaning towards a 3:30 goal, but I also want to just experience all that Boston is. Still got a few months until training plan will start, but of course I've been training away and contemplating a half marathon in the beginning of November.
